*All pregnant mommies are welcome!

I remember when I was pregnant (living in Santee at the time) and I searched and searched the internet for prenatal exercise classes and all I could find was a gentle yoga. I ended up attending the yoga classes and it was relaxing but it did not give me the cardio and strength I was looking for! Pregnancy is not a state of weakness and I was looking for a way to get my heart pumping and stay strong! Labor and Delivery is similar to a marathon, which requires a lot of training.  I don't think anyone would want to participate in a marathon after nine months of inactivity. I am so glad that I kept fit during my pregnancy because my labor ended up being twenty six hours! The strength and endurance I had during labor and the three hours of pushing was definitely a result of staying fit throughout my pregnancy. I admit I was nervous about exercising during pregnancy because my doctor didn't give me specific instructions and there wasn't very much information on the internet that I could trust. This is another reason why I am so excited to offer Fit4Baby Prenatal Classes! I want to help educate pregnant mommies on the benefits of exercise during pregnancy and provide a safe environment to gain the strength for motherhood! Each Class will provide cardio, strength training, balance, and flexibility with modifications for every stage of pregnancy. There will be a guided meditation at the end of class which will also serve as a lullaby for your baby :)

Fit4Baby classes will be held on Tuesdays at 7pm.

To Burn or Not to Burn is the Question

Everyone loves the smell of a fire during the holiday season. But wood burning fireplaces introduce unique hazards, including the possible emission of toxic chemicals. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency identifies some of these toxic chemicals as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), dioxin and inhalable particulate matter. These air pollutants can cause a wide range of health problems such as burning eyes, coughing, headaches and bronchitis.

To minimize the emission of toxic chemicals with a wood-burning fire:

• Only burn dry seasoned hardwoods like oak, hickory and ash
• Avoid burning soft woods like pine and cedar
• Avoid burning wet wood and wood treated in any way (like painted wood, plywood, etc.)
• Never burn plastics, cardboard, garbage, gift wrapping, magazines, etc.

If you want the beauty of a fire without the big environmental impact, light soy or beeswax candles. Get several large pillar candles or varying heights and place them on a flat surface in your fireplace. They are cleaner and gentler on the environment, but are every bit as beautiful and fragrant. Plus they last longer!

Passionately Pink Healthy Home Party

Santee Stroller Strides recently partnered with Haute Mommy blogger (who is also a Santee Stroller Strides and Luna Moms Club member) to host a Healthy Homes party. We added the Passionately Pink element to include breast cancer awareness for the month of October. An organization called Healthy Child Healthy World offers the healthy home party kit on their website for a small donation. This organization is looking for people to host the parties and spread the word about toxins in the home. We decided to just that and invited Luna Moms Club members to join our efforts. Our Passionately Pink Healthy Home Party was a fundraiser for Healthy Child Healthy World and served as our monthly Mom's Night Out. We had so many prizes to giveaway, some came with the party kit and the rest were collected by myself and Haute Mommy. Here are some of the prizes that were given away: Happy Baby Organic guide, Klean Kanteen water bottles, Plum baby food, Revolution sampler, Episencial gift basket, Yes to Carrots bubble bath, and much more!
The party guests were required to purchase a ticket in order to be entered into the raffle and we raised  $100 to donate to Healthy Child Healthy World. The party guests were informed of the "5 Easy Steps" they could take to avoid toxins and make their home safer for baby. We then heard from our guest speaker Kristine Valenzuela who writes a column on San Diego Bargain Mama's website. She was also recently featured on NBC discussing organic food and CSA programs.

Afterward I demonstrated how easy it is to make your own cleaner by using the following recipe:
Multi-Purpose Cleaner
2 liters Water
1/2 Cup White Vinegar
2 tbsp Borax

This is not only a great non-toxic cleaner to use on all surfaces, it is very inexpensive to make! I have a large bottle of vinegar and box of Borax that will last me at least six months. After the cleaner was made, we raffled off the prizes. So many great prizes went home with all the moms! I made special mention about the use of organic tampons because it was a product I had not event considered to be dangerous before I started researching information for the party. I was so used to grabbing my preferred brand off the shelf that I hadn't even noticed that Target carries Seventh Generation organic cotton tampons that are chlorine-free. I wanted to make sure the other moms were made aware of the amount of chemicals that could be getting into our systems through that route :)
All and all, it was a successful Mom's Night Out/Healthy Home Party. Each mom got to enjoy a night out and took home some great knowledge & awesome prizes!
